Edward bit his lip nervously. "I...er...well...you just...I" Edward stumbled. What if she didn't feel the same. What if he made himself look like an idiot. But he was so drawn to her. "You make...you make me act weird. I'm an idiot.Edward sighed.
He looked up to try and read her face. Her blue eyes looked thoughtful. They were so, beautiful. Edward had never thought this way about any girl. He was still trying to figure out what it was that attracted him to her so much.

She smiled as he stumbled ove rhis words. He was adorable. "Yeah, well, that feeling's mutual she said ruefully, but there was a smirk on her lips and a twinkle in her eye that said she didn't mind. She smiled at him, a small, open gesture. She laughed a bit. "Relax a bit, kid. I'm not one of those bitches who judges people on every little move they make" she said suddenly. She wished he'd just ease up. He didn't have to feel so uncomfortable. Mercedes hated that. She'd always wanted people to feel like they could come to her and be open an dhonest without feeling judged or stupid. She wasn't going to chew him out or bite his head of or something. Hell, she didn't even care if he acted like an idiot. Everyone had their days, including Sadie. And, sometimes, she thought ruefully, I have more than my fair share of "days".

Edward felt his face turn red again. He looked down at his feet. Was he just kidding himself? He looked back up. Mercedes had a smile playing on her face. She was smiling at him. Edward felt his stomach flop again. He'd have to get used to this. He let a small smile escape.
He eased up little by little. The more he looked at her, the more he felt safe. It would take a while for him to be completely comfortable with her but this was a start. Edward was never one to open up to anyone. Even Rosalie had to persuade him to talk to her about his thoughts. It wasn't Mercedes. It was him. When his father left, he sort of placed a bubble around himself. Rosalie was the only person he'd ever opened up to. No one else had seen the real Edward Masen Rackley. Who he really was. As he sat there with Mercedes, experiencing things he'd never experienced before, he found himself wishing he could maybe one day, show her the real him.
Edward turned his torso towards Mercedes and scanned her face thoughtfully. "I don't really know what to say." Edward never had a chance to be charming before. He never had to be before.

She heaved a bit of a sigh, stroking Glitter firmly as the cat stretched, arching her back into Mercedes' touch. The small smile still played across her lips, but it was almost rueful. How long could this possibly last? Was it only a game that they were playing for a while and would eventually abandon? She glanced up, her blue eyes keen and understanding. "Then don't say anything" she murmured, looking down at the cat in her lap. It wasn't as if they needed to speak. It didn't have to be an uncomfortable, akward silence. It could be whatever they wanted it to be. They could be whatever they wanted to be. The rueful-ness left her smile and it was just a genuine, small, almost conspiratory smile, as if the two of them shared in some big secret or something.
Mercedes, on the other hand, had always been a very open person. It didn't take a person long to get to know who she was. She was just obvious, and she never had anything to hide. No big secrets, nothing at all like that. She was just a bubbly, happy, off the wall kind of girl, one of those girls who was easy to love if you were interested at all in loving someone. She was just lovable. Her personality made her endearing.

Edward nodded in response. She was right. He didn't have to say anything. He was warming up to her, to his suprise. He cocked his head slightly to the side as he followed her fingers as they made their way through Glitter's fur. He hoped he wasn't making a mistake. His tension returned. What if all this, became nothing in a few months, even in a few days. He couldn't let that happen. He'd already gone WAY past his comfort zone. He was convinced that there was no going back.
Edward took a deep breath in. Was he naive to think that maybe this beautiful girl sitting only a few feet away from him could possibly feel these same feelings as he did now? He looked at her. How could she possible think anything of him. He wasn't anything special. At least he didn't think so. Actually, he thought of himself as rather rude. Quiet and unsocial. But, he never meant to be rude. That was just him. The way he was. But in these few hours, so many layers of the wall that surrounded him, had come of all for the sake of the girl sitting in that small room alongside him, who had made him feel things in a day that one only hoped to feel in a lifetime.

The girl watched him from the corner of her eye. She seemed quite interested in the cat in her lap, really, but that wasn't truly the case. She was watching Edward from the corner of her eye.
She wasn't too sure about things either. They'd only just met. COuld they really know each other well enough to know whether they actually liked each other? Or was it just chemicals moving through her body? She heaved a sigh. Why did things like life and love have to be so complicated? Why couldn't they just be simple?! It would make things so much easier. But then, when had things ever been easy? Mercedes couldn't remember a time in her life when things had been simple. That was just the way things were.
She glanced up from the cat, glancing at Edward's face, seeming to search there, like she might find answers to all her questions there, but she couldn't read a thing...

Edward pushed the thoughts racing through his head, away. He couldn't possibly believe that he, Edward Masen Rackley who had never EVER been interested in anyone, had feeling for this girl he met just a few hours ago in this strange city he now called home? No, that was silly. Wasn't it? Edward felt his wall start to rebuild itself. His confidence shattered as his sbody tensed.
He saw Mercedes' eyes pause on his face which was followed by a frustrated expression, as if she didn't see what she had expected. Edward heard noises in the bathroom down the hall, begging Rosalie to come save him. Then, a door opened and the familiar shuffle of his sister's flats filled his ears.
"So what did I miss?" Rosalie plopped herself back into her spot and looked at the time on her phone. "I guess we should go soon." Edward nodded quickly and shifted his gaze to his feet, careful not to let his eyes meet, Mercedes'. He needed sleep. Thats all. Maybe it was a full moon or something. That was a perfect explanation for his actions. He would be back to his old self tomorrow. Edward bit his lip. He hoped.

Mercedes heaved a bit of a sigh. She could simply feel his wall start to rebuild itself. Here she thought that she'd made a break through and convinced him that she was a decent person, not someone he needed to be scared of, and then boom, back he was again to his introverted, man-of-few-words self.
She glanced up and a bright smile lit her face as Rosalie entered. "Oh, not much" she said, glancing at Edward, a smile still on her face. It wasn't fake, though, surprisingly. It was one of those genuine smiles. Mercedes wasn't a fake person. If she didn't want to smile, she wouldn't, and she definitely wouldn't fake it. She was a very genuine person, very real. She said what she felt, and she always meant what she said, and she didn't beat around the bush...Until today. Why hadn't she come out and just said Hey, I like you? Well, duh, can you say akward?
She glanced up, a bit surprised and a look of slight disappointment crossed her features when Edward said they should be going soon, but it was gone in a flash. She glanced out at the rain still pouring down in great sheets. "I can give you guys a ride of you like" she offered.
