to face the fear but not feel scared...
The girl darted easily in and out of the crowds, leading the couple behind her down the road. She weaved easily in and out of the people, obviously used to negotiating the crowds. Everyone else was hurrying as much as Mercedes was. She fought the crowds, seemingly unfazed by being shoved and jostled.
Some looked at her. She was so short and skinny that she appeared fragile, like maybe at any second the jostling and shoving would shatter her, as if she were porcelain or something. And she did rather have that fragile look about her. But it was clear that she could fend for herself. Someone shoved her hard and she barely seemed to notice as she shuffled a bit to keep her balance.
The crowds lessened as she neared her apartment. They were getting into the residential area and there weren't as many people here. She picked up a jog as the rain began to splatter around them. She turned sharply, shoving open a gate with reckless abandon and darting down the short sidewalk, jumping up the two steps onto the doorway, fumbling with the keys in her hand and shoving it into the lock. She opened the door, ushering Edward and Rosalie in after her, closing the door behind them, and shaking her wet bangs out of her eyes.
She had led them into a small entryway, although it clearly wasn't her apartment. She slipped passed them, moving down a narrow, if rather dingy hall way, and pausing in front of another door. She had relaxed now that they were out of the rain. While Mercedes didn't mind being drenched, she doubted the twins were of the same mindset as she.
She fought the lock a few moments, jimmying the handle. If she hadn't looked so relaxed and at ease, you might have thought she were breaking in or something. It seemed the key didn't fit the lock. She finally pushed the door open, shaking her head as she stepped into the rather small apartment, tossing her keys on the counter.
You came in through a short hallway type thing, with the bathroom on your left, the single bedroom to the right, although the door was closed so one could only assume that's what it was. Once you were out of the hall, you were in a rather small kitchen, with a bar counter, and then a small living room with a TV, couch, and recliner, a laptop abandoned in the easy chair. It was cleaner than one might have expected from Mercedes. She seemed the type to be wreckless and not worry too much about whether her house was clean. Everything was clean and tidy, however, although it was rather hard to keep things dirty in such a small space. There just wasn't room. The bedroom was a complete disaster, though, which was why the door was closed. She laughed a little self conciously. She doubted it was what the Rackleys were used to in London. "Well, welcome to my humble abode" she said with a slight laugh. "You guys want something to drink or anything like that?" she asked, yanking open a rather stubborn refridgorator door and peering inside, glancing over her shoulder expectantly at Edward and Rosalie.

Edward followed Mercedes through the crowded streets. He watched as she manuvered with ease. He was impressed. But not suprised. She had seemed like the kind of girl who would fight to get her way. And she did just that, pushing and tugging her way through the ocean of people. Edward stumbled behind her. He, unfortunatley, wasn't as familiar with these crowds. He felt a hand slip into his. Edward didn't need to look to know it was Rosalie's. He held the small hand tightly and pulled it through the mass, rain splashing around him.
The three of them reached Mercedes apartment building. As Mercedes fumbled with her keys, Edward examined the building. It was nice. Nicer than his most likely. The twins followed Mercedes into a hallway that smelled faintly of smoke. Edward felt the familiar itch in his throat. Realizing, he and Rosalie's hands were still laced together, he squeezed her hand gently. He felt an understanding squeeze in reply. His muscles eased up. It was easier to resist smoking with Rosalie around.
They continued down the red-flecked carpet to a door at which Mercedes once again slipped her key into the lock and pushed it open with ease. Edward held the door open for Rosalie and himself. It was heavier than he had expected. He smiled to himself. Mercedes was definatley not a book to be judged by its cover. Edward, running his hand through his damp hair, stepped behind his sister, into the tiny space that was Mercedes' apartment. It was rather clean and welcoming. He watched as Mercedes dropped her keys on the counter and glided over to her refrigerator, asking if they wanted anything to drink. "I would love some water, thanks!", Rosalie chirpped in. Edward smiled. "I'll be fine.". He watched as Mercedes poured water into a glass and handed it gently to his sister. There was something about her that was different than the others. Better maybe. Still, Edward was cautious.
He sat on the couch where he was soon joined by Rosalie, who sipped her water excitedly. Edward propped his leg on his knee and observed as Mercedes danced around the kitchen, putting things away he guessed. Her could see her bright blue eyes shine in contrast against her dark hair. He shook his head and looked down. What was his problem? He knew where this would end up. It wasn't real. How could it be? It was just in his head...right?

to face the fear but not feel scared
She nodded, yanking a gallon jug of water out of the fridge. "I hate city water" she explained as she handed the glass to Rosalie. "You don't want anything?" she asked Edward curiously. "Then again, I suppose we got rained on enough to quench a person's thirst" she teased as she gazed into the refridgerator. Finally she pulled out a can of Coke and flopped down on the recliner, wiggling her laptop out from under her. The thing had obviously seen better days. There were scratches all over creation and a couple stains, but hey, it still worked. Mercedes set it on the ground without much ceremony and tugged her feet up under her. A large spotted cat wandered over as if she owned the place and jumped onto Mercedes' lap, curling up. "This is my cat Glitter. And there's a kitten around her somewhere...Shit!" she exclaimed, jumping out of the recliner and steadying it so it didn't rock. She dropped onto her hands and knees. "Ouch, you damn thing, knock it off" she hissed, and was soon dragging a little spotted kitten out from under the chair. "That is not a good place for you to be, Miss Sparkle" Mercedes lectured the cat like she was human or something. "I rock and you get squished" She shook her head, stroking the kitten firmly as she flopped back onto the recliner, her legs curled up again. Glitter joined them before long, purring loudly and rubbing against Mercedes' stomach. "Why don't you go see Edward and Rosalie?" she asked. "Unless you guys don't like cats?" she asked, jerking her head up to gaze at them. BUt the cat was obviously settling in for a long while, for she curled up in a small ball in the space between Sadie's legs. She shook her head and let the cats snuggle up to her.
Mercedes found herself watching Edward and Rosalie curiously. "Siblings" was something so foreign to her. She'd never even met any of her half brothers and sisters, and she doubted she had any full siblings. Her mom wasn't even sure who her father was! She felt a twinge of jealousy and glanced away. She knew that a person could read everything in her eyes, and she didn't want Edward and Rosalie to see that mirrored there. She wasn't some drama queen, she wasn't bitter, she wasn't eve na jealous person. It was simply that sometimes she wondered what things would have been like if they'd been different. If her mom had given her up for adoption like all the ones that went before. Would it have been any better?
She nibbled on her lip a bit, until she bit down hard enough to draw blood. She hadn't even realized she was doing it, and she jerked hersel fback to the present. Gosh, Sadie, stop being rude! she told herself, dragging her mind away from her t houghts and bac kto the present. SHe couldn't remember what she'd already asked them. WIth a panic she realized she had no idea what to say. One couldn't see any of this on her face of course, unless you happened to be watching her eyes. Mercedes' eyes really were the mirror of her heart, and they were so easily re adable. She couldn't do anything about it. She shoved her hair away from her face, scrambling for something to say, to make her not seem like such a rude hostess. "You guys wanna watch a movie or something?" she asked. Lame. You could've done better Mercedes James she scolded herself.

As Mercedes came to sit down, a large spotted cat pranced up to meet her. Edward heard Mercedes call her Glitter. He smirked. A typical name for a cat. He suddenly felt awkward knowing he had a cat of his own at home named Henry the Great. Would Mercedes find that weird? He thought it was a perfectly good name. But then again, he was ten years old when he named him. Edward stopped himself before his mind ran away with him once again. He looked up to Mercedes shouting and scooping a small kitten out from underneath her recliner. Sparkle. Edward sighed. Why was he so concerned about what Mercedes thought? Why did it matter?
Edward looked to Rosalie to distract himself from his racing thoughts. She smiled, her pink cheeks glowing. He never knew what possesed Rosalie to keep loving him the way she did. He wasn't the best brother nor person. Still, Edward was Rosalie's best friend. And vice versa. Edward reached for her hand and Rosalie grasped his firmly. She was his support, his strength. His return to reality. Edward turned back to Mercedes. She was staring at the twins. He could see a wanting in her eyes. An envy. She quickly turned away. Edward pretended he didn't notice.
Rosalie responded first to Mercedes' question. "Ooo! What do you have? i love movies!!" She bounced up and down excitedly. Edward nodded in agreement. "A movie would be nice. There isn't much else we can do." He glanced at the window, which was being showered with rain. All he could see was blurred shadows of buildings and fog. He figured they would be here for a while.

to face the fear but not feel scared
Mercedes smiled a bit and pushed herself off the recliner, grabbing Sparkle by the scruff of her neck and dumping her unceromoniously on the re cliner. "Don't move" she told the cat, and crawled to the entertainment center, opening 4 drawers filled with movies. She had just about everything you could imagine, from The Horse Whisperer to When a Stranger Calls. "Nothing creepy please. I have to sleep alone tonight" she said with a slight smirk.
For some odd reason she didn't feel the usual desire to go out and party, so she supposed she would be home alone tonight. At any rate, she sat back and let Rosalie go through the videos. She had tons.
She glanced out the window at the rain pouring down. She glanced over her shoulder at Edward. "I can give you guys a ride home if you'd like" she said. She didn't want them to feel stuck here or anything. Rosalie seemed fine, but Edward seemed...Well, kind of withdrawn. She just couldn't q uite fi gure him out. She heaved a bit of a sigh, turning back to Rosalie. Eventually they picked out a movie, and Mercedes shoved it in without really noticing what it was. She grabbed the remotes and crawled back to her recliner, grabbing the kitten, who had listened for once, and sitting back down. She turned up the volume, and clicked the play button for the DVD. She got up and snapped off all the lights before settling into the recliner again. "Oh! Do you guys want popcorn or something?" she asked, getting to her feet and making her way to the kitchen. She'd already seen this movie, so she didn't mind missing a bit of it...

Edward watched as Rosalie sat cross-legged on Mercedes' carpet, shuffling through the movies. There must have been at least a hundred and something movies in there. If not more. Ok maybe thats slighty exagerated. Edward chuckled to himself, making sure he kept it to himself this time. He felt a pair of eyes on him. Mercedes was staring. Edward felt his rise in temperature. What was she thinking? Wait, again, why did he care? Edward felt the stare subside when Mercedes left her recliner to assist Rosalie.
Edward watched her as she moved. It was so strange. The way he was acting. What he was thinking. The way he was feeling. It was all new to him. It wasn't like him. And as hard as it was for him to admit, it was a lilttle frightening. He'd never had a crush on nor love for any person other than his mother and Rosalie. He didn't really know what to think of this. What to do with it. Wait it out? Edward clenched his hands into fists, clearly uncomfortable. He felt the couch move to his right and a hand unfolded his fist. The familiar hand moved to his cheek. He relaxed at Rosalie's touch.
Edward barely heard Mercedes when she asked if they would like popcorn. He was too buried in his thoughts. "We're fine thanks." Rosalie replied quickly knowing her brother wouldn't. Edward turned his head to see Mercedes' questioning expression. What did she think of him? What was she thinking? Did she think he was a freak? Just some odd kid from London? Edward shivered.

The girl shrugged a bit. "Oh, ok" She grabbed a bag of popcorn anyway and shoved it in the microwave, slamming the door a couple times before it actually stayed closed. She started it up, and the soft whir filled the apartment.
She wandered back out, leaning against the bar, watching the movie begin as the popcorn popped in the microwave. When it as finally done, she grabbed a bit metal bowl from one of the cupboards and dumped the bag of popcorn into it.
She wandered back out to the living room and flopped on the recliner again, her eyes glued to the TV although she wasn't really watching. Her thoughts were wandering, and you could tell. Her eyes had that spacy, distant look. "Lemme know if you guys want any of this, cause I won't eat it all" she told them.
She pulled her legs up beneath her and let her thoughts wander. What was going through Edward's head? He had to be one of the quietest people she'd ever met. He just let Rosalie do all the talking, which was fine, but Mercedes wondered if she was over powering...She stopped suddenly. Girl, what are you doing? You do NOT need a man in your life! she thought to herself, yanking her thoughts briskly back to the movie, a bit flustered with herself.

Edward bit his lip and peered over at Mercedes, who had gotten up to make popcorn. He watched as she mindlessly tossed a bag into the black rectangle on her kitchen counter and pressed a few buttons. In her eyes, Edward could tell she was far away. His eyes scanned over her soft face. Her bright blue eyes, staring off into the distance, somewhere Edward wish he knew. If he could only figure out what she was thinking, maybe he could relax.
The sudden beeping of the microwave startled him. He looked back towards the movie screen, pretending to watch just as Mercedes had done. She glided back into the room and settled into her chair. She said something that Edward couldn't quite put together. He felt Rosalie shift in her seat. He nodded slowly, knowing she was wondering what as going on with him. Little did she know, so was he.
The remaining hour of the movie passed quickly concidering Edward paid no attention to it what-so-ever. Maybe he needed sleep. It would all be gone in the morning. It would be nothing. Its all in my head. Edward spoke to himself over and over, convinving himself this was nothing. Nothing helped. He looked out the window once more. A few stars dotted the black sky. Raindrops were still racing down the glass.

to face the fear but not feel scared
The girl heaved a sigh. The movie was flickering past her eyes without her awareness. Her gaze drifted around the room. "Ouch! Damn cat" she hissed, as Glitter stretched, unsheating her claws and raking them across Mercedes' leg. She shoved the cat off her lap and heaved a sigh.
She ganced at the rain out the window before her eyes trailed to Edward and Rosalie. They were adorable, just exactly how Mercedes had always pictured siblings, and twins in particular. It was hardly even fair. SHe dragged her eyes and attentions back to the TV screen.
She tried to convince herself that she really didn't care, and she was doing a pretty good job until she looked at Edward and Rosalie again, and she knew that she was lieing to herself.
She pushed herself to her feet. "You guys want any? I'll give it to the cats if you don't. I'm done with it" Truth was, she had made herself about half sick on the stuff.
Finally, the movie was over, and Mercedes was no closer to figuring Edward, or herself, out than she had been at the beginning. She popped the DVD out of the player and put it away. It was only 8:30, but the cloud cover made it a lot darker and seem a lot later. She glanced at Edward and Rosalie, a little akwardly. "I can take you guys home if you want...I mean, I don't wanna kick you out or anything. I'd love if you stayed, but it's not like there's much to do" she gave a helpless little shrug. Her house was boring. About the only thing she had going for her was Guitar Hero and movies. She didn't really want them to leave yet, either, though.

Edward looked to Rosalie for an answer. He found himself wishing she would tell Mercedes yes. Obviously, Rosalie read his mind. "We can stay a while. If you don't mind of course.", Rosalie shot Edward a small grin. She knew. Nothing ever got past her.
"Hey Mercedes, do you mind if I use your bathroom?" Rosalie headed down the hallway without an answer, figuring the bathroom couldn't be to hard to find. Before they knew it, Mercedes and Edward were left alone in awkward silence.
Edward glared towards the hallway where Rosalie had just dissapeared into. She just had to do that didn't she. Edward knew she would probably sit in the bathroom for thirty minutes just so Mercedes and Edward could be alone. Edward looked towards Mercedes who was staring intently at her feet. "Er...How'd you like the movie?" Edward cringed. Could he sound any more stupid?

to face the fear but not feel scared
She glanced up at Rosalie, kind of surprised, nodding mutely, her mind going blank. She glanced up at Edward as he spoke and shrugged a bit. "It's kind of funny, because this is the first movie basically everyone picks when they end up at my place." She smiled a bit, stroking Glitter as the cat meandered over. "It's a good movie, but it gets a little old" she glanced up at him and smiled, looking into his face, searching it for a moment, as if she expected to find something there. She glanced away as she realized she was staring. Don't be rude she told herself as she rose. She heaved a bit of a sigh. "So...Do you miss London? Maybe I already asked that" she said. She plopped down on the chair again, pulling her legs up underneath her.
She looked at easy, comfortable, with him, with where she was. She was just a comfortable person. She hardly ever felt out of place...Or she hadn't until she met Edward. And he set off a whole new palette of emotions she hadn't even noticed before. Guys were jerks. None of them ever wanted more than a one night stand, and so she gave it to them, because she hated being alone, and they were gone in the morning. You wouldn't have known it, just watching her, but she wasn't really satisfied with the one night stands and the parties. It wasn't good enough. She was rather a home body, and she dreamed of having her cute little home. But she'd figured it was possible, because no one else seemed to think relationships should be forever. But maybe that wasn't true. Maybe there was someone else. She heaved a sigh and pulled herself into the present. Who was she kidding?

Edward nodded as Mercedes spoke. Not that he was really paying any attention. His mind was still testing him. What was it about her that made him act this way? He'd never acted this way. Ever. He glanced at her and at the same moment, she glanced at him. There eyes met, but he didn't pull away. Neither did she. She stared right back into his staring eyes. He saws something in her. He would have said something, but she turned away too quickly and he would have felt ridiculous.
She asked him if he missed London. This time, he heard her. He hung onto every word so he wouldn't make a fool of himself anymore. "Yeah I think you did ask that." Edward smiled shyly at her, "But I'll answer again. I so miss it. I want to go back one day when I'm married. And have a little house in the country." Edward nodded at the thought.

((OOC: No Worries. =) ))
The girl smiled and nodded. "Yeah. It looks like a gorgeous place." She trailed off a bit, realizing that they'd already gone through this, but mostly because her mind was processing that one bit of information. "You want to get married?" she asked curiously. "Not many people want that this day and age" she mumbled ruefully. There was something in her voice, hard to catch, but there none the less. Longing. Anger. Hurt? It was hard to tell. It was always hard to tell with Mercedes. She was just kind of a difficult person to understand. She found her chin on her fist, her gaze thoughtful, then pulled herself back to reality, realizing she must look like a complete dork. She glanced at Edward again, and again their eyes met, and she offered a smile, a small little expression that pulled up little dimples at the corners of her mouth and lit up her face. It said a lot more than words ever could have...

Edward searched Mercedes' face as she looked at him thoughtfully. Ugh. This was torturing. He wanted so badly to know what she was thinking. "Yeah, I couldn't imagine living the rest of my life without the one girl who is made just for me. I don't think I'd survive. I know she's out there. Somewhere." Edward and Mercedes' eyes met and he felt his stomach flop. He looked awkwardly down at his torso. What was that? That feeling?
He looked back up. Her face was questioning. "Oh. Er...sorry you just..." He stopped. He'd just met her! He couldn't possibly....Could he?

She smiled at him again, watching him look down shyly. "No. You just what?" she encouraged softly. She glanced warily down the hall, not really sure how Rosalie would take Mercedes hitting on her brother. It wasn't obvious, but still, she was. She heaved a sigh, glancing down and examining the chipping black polish on her fingernails. Maybe he wasn't what she'd thought. Maybe he wasn't feeling what she thought he was, hoped he was. Maybe she was just making it all up. But...Maybe...Maybe she wasn't. She heaved a sigh, her thoughts completely muddled. She didn't know what she wanted or thought. She didn't know what Edward thought or wanted. Maybe they were just getting themselves into a mess...She had no idea.
